Hi Ropst. That’s a good history question, but you don’t need me to help you find the answer. Sometimes it is good to have someone point you in the right direction, and sometimes you can get the answer yourself by putting “Milky Way” into a search engine like Google, or looking it up in an encyclopedia. I just did this, and I promise you the answer isn’t far away. You might learn something else about the galaxy when you do!

Hi Ropst!! Since Drew has a valuable lesson here – A very essential skill every scientist must possess: the ability to google well!! – I won’t spoil the surprise =) However, observation is also key. Have you ever gone out on a really really dark night and seen the milky way? It is PHENOMENAL!! Really one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. You should do it. When you do it might give you some insight into the derivation of the name =)
