Hi flainey! I don’t think anyone knows the answer to this question. Its not something even science can definitively answer. There are a lot of ways the world could end (impact by asteroid, environmental crisis, nuclear war, aliens, zombies …. the list goes on). But the thing is all of these things are exceedingly unlikely to occur in our lifetime or even with our children’s or children’s children’s lifetime. So, my philosophy is not to stress about it! But, I do think we should all be conscientious global citizens who work to protect our planet and its resources. That is our best bet =)

Hi Flainey. As Sara says, we don’t know the answer, or even what will cause it. There is an upper limit though. The sun is getting hotter, and in about a billion years we think all the water on earth will boil. Around 4 billion years after that, current thinking is that the earth will get swallowed by the sun as it expands into a red giant.

If you’re still here in 500 million years or so, I’d suggest it will be time to start thinking about booking a ticket to a different solar system, or maybe one of the outer planets.

When the sun runs out… an asteroid hits us… or we destroy the planet ourselves!

Nobody knows. But when the sun dies then the world will end. That is about 3.5 billion years away though so no need to worry!
