The brain swells when it becomes damaged. It is caused by a build up of fluid in the brain. Brain swelling is very serious and can be caused by a really bad blow to the head, a stroke, brain tumours, an infection, altitude sickness, birth defects or genetic abnormalities to name just a few causes.
