Bamboo definitely grows fast, but not that fast. The fastest it has ever been measured to grow is a metre a day. If you think about it, that’s not much more than an inch or two an hour. If you picked the right moment you might be able to tell that it was getting taller.

Bamboo can grow so fast because its structure is closer to grass than trees, but it is bigger than other grass so the same proportional growth is much bigger in absolute terms.

I guess it would depend how fast you perceived time…maybe if watching bamboo grow is something you really enjoy time would fly by so fast you could see it growing?? okay…so that was silly. As Drew says, its fast…but not that fast!! 🙂

If you used time lapse photography you could video it over a day and then speed it up and see how much it had grown. It might be a bit dull to watch it grow, maybe if you made a mark on something nearby you could see that it had grown.

Hi robina! Drew’s description seems spot on. I personally wouldn’t sit out and try to watch it though. I might however watch it in time-lapse like Kimberley has suggested. Have you every watched a plant grow or even watched a whole forest in time-lapse? Its amazing!! I’ve seen it on discovery channel a bunch of times, never ceases to amaze me. All this life moving at a much slower pace than us, but still so vibrant!
