Hi Vanessa. I agree – I think we need more “Rock Star” scientists. Carl Sagan was like that – he was a respected scientist who knew how to make science fascinating. Have you seen or heard of the Uncaged Monkey’s tour? I think that’s what they are trying to do – to use celebrity status to sell science.

I am very glad that you think this. I have lots of ideas for a science game show, I have actually been seriously thinking about trying to get it made. How about having Stephen Fry as a presenter?

Hey Vanessa! I think people look at their science teachers and think – no way do I want to be like that (unless their science teacher is street and …eh… “down wi da kids” of course) but science is for everyone…not just people with beards!! maybe thats what we could do with the money from I’m a Scientist…make a hip and trendy TV show?

We have to also bear in mind though that we live in a celebrity culture where everyone wants to be “it” and in the spotlight…often as a scientist you have to work away in the background for years before getting any recognition so its not really a celebrity career – but heck you can still look trendy doing it!! 🙂

OH!! I couldn’t agree more!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are definitely on to something lady! I think it would be amazing if more scientists were on tv. Kimberley should totally make her gameshow =)

The question I have for you vanessa is how can we make science more sexy to the general public?? Since you have taste I’d love to know! Within scientific communities we certainly have celebrities and every once and while one comes through to the public – like Stephen Hawking or Neil Tyson DeGrasse. But those are rare, and generally older scientists. I think a young generation of cool scientists becoming more mainstream would be sooo great. Websites are good for doing that kind of stuff. That is in part why I want to do this website about young astrobiologists – they hail from a lot of disciplines (astronomy, geology, chemistry, biology, engineering – you name it we’ve got it!) and they are cool people. Any suggestions from you would be fabulous =)
