Oooh. Good question. Can I take a fully working internet please? No? Once we’ve got the basics to survive, good metal-working is at the heart of agriculture and industry. If I had to choose one thing it would be a design for a good hot oven. I could use it for pottery as well.
Ah well to re-create the world we need to populate it – so assuming the actual planet is intact we would need people to actually do stuff like agriculture and industry or else we’d just die out. So I guess I would have to take a boy! 🙂
I like this question!………………and I like Amy’s answer!!! 🙂
I’m not sure what to take, I can think of lots of non scientific things…maybe a medicine cabnet full of medicines…a new world with a head ache wudn’t be so fun 🙂
Hmmm, this is a tough one! Amy’s answer is great! My question is what do you mean by ended? Do you mean the all life on Earth is demolished or just human civilization? I think that could dramatically change my answer. If it is an end to human civilization, I am with Amy – I would bring a boy 😉 However if all life were destroyed right down to microscopic life, I would bring a bacteria. Eventually evolution would take over and make the “endless forms most beautiful” we see on Earth today. Over 3 billion years of evolution got us to the diversity we see today – the origin of life might be hard – but at least if we have a microbe to start with step 1 is covered!!
Aha!! i thought of this…but you would have no way of keeping the sperm cryo-preserved…unless the world we are re-populating has a freezer?? so its easier just to keep it where it belongs!
Kimberley, you would have a spaceship, but what about fuel, provisions, the skills to fly it, a way to maintain it and a crew? I myself would go for a collection of primitive bacteria to evolve.
At the risk of sounding completely geeky, if you take gaia theory (which states that the earth is a single system)into account couldn’t you take the entire earth with you? Though the question does say that the world has been destroyed taking an object means you stop its destruction, so taking the earth effectively saves it. Or is this cheating?
I don’t know that much about it except for the concept. I suppose that we view animals and humans as all one organism rather than mentioning the billions of bacteria inside of them, so it makes sense.

Amy, surely it would be more efficient to take another woman, and some sperm? You could make double the babies, and there’d be more genetic diversity.

My spaceship is fully equipped. Who says that I can’t already fly a spaceship, I don’t need a crew as it is just big enough for me.
Fair point. In that case I am taking my TARDIS

Dagnabbit. Countered once more!

But assuming it’s an object rather than another human, how about a plant? Or maybe a solar panel to help power any inventions?

My tardis is packed and ready

Clever cheat Bridget! I like it! Gaia theory is pretty interesting isn’t it?
