Hi caitlin – a lot – there are some that live really deep down that we probably haven’t even discovered yet!! The sea is a largely undiscovered world to us!! 🙂

Hey Caitlin… thousands… millions… It’s be difficult to put an exact number on it.
Scientists are discovering new sea creatures all the time. This is because they now have new and improved submarines to explore the deepest darkest parts of the oceans. Some say that we know more about space than what lies in the deepest oceans… interesting huh?

Endless forms most beautiful!! To quote a little Darwin 😉

Far too many to count! Especially if we count the microbes! In a teaspoon full of your own backyard there are 1 million to 1 billion tiny microbes – likely representing as many as 10,000 different species. Imagine what is possible in the oceans!! The animal diversity is surely huge as well. I mean there are ecosystems in the harshest of environments in hydrothermal vents at the bottom of the sea!! Look at all this life so deep down that no light penetrates (e.g. http://www.deepseaphotography.com/vent_animals.html)

All the more reason to explore!
