Well you can go into a science career with just A levels.. your qualification just depends what level of the business or science you go into. weather you want to be a lab technician or a team leader or manager. You;re more likely (I hope so anyway) to go in further at the top with a high level of education!

Alot of people go into industry after an undergraduate degree (3-4 years) some people do masters after that (~1 years) and some of us crazies decide to do a phd (~3 years).

It also all depends on the job market at the time… I wanted to go into industry straight after uni, but struggled to get a job, however I was lucky enough to find PHD position that would take me 🙂

It depends on what you want to do. As Julia said in order to do a PhD you need a degree in science which takes 3-4 years. If you want to be a full time academic researcher you will need a PhD and they also take 3-4 years. A lot of my friends went straight into industry after undergraduate degree so it isn’t always necessary to do either a PhD or a MAsters depending on what it is you want to do.

It does depend what you do – I went to Uni in Scotland so I think course lengths are different from England. It also depends on what kind of science career you want. If I had wanted to be a science teacher I would have done a year of teacher training after my 4year degree…as it was I did a year working in industry as part of my degree (which made it 5!) and then started a PhD…but you can work in science without a PhD – both in industry and in academia. It just depends what you are interested in and how much responsibility you want! 🙂
